Law Moot Committee

The College regularly conducts law moots to prepare the students to effectively present their cases in the courts. The moots are held under the supervision of the Law Moot Committee. The Committee constituted for this year comprises the following faculty members:

  2. Mr. Aurangzeb Daha(Organizer)
  3. Mr. Yasir Hafiz(Co-coordinator)
  4. Mr. Afzal Sidiquie (Co-Chairperson)
The Committee has finalized a schedule for the moots which will be held from February, 2007, The Barrister Jinnah Prize Moot will be held in April 2007. Students will also be invited from our Rawalpindi campuses to participate in the grand annual event.


Formation of Co-Curricular Societies

To groom the character and professional skills of the students, the College has since introduced various co-curricular activities; and, for effective management of these activities, the following societies have been set up:
1. Dramatic Society
2. Debating Society
3. Law Moot Committee and
4. Sports Club


English Language Classes

Good communication skills are necessary for every lawyer. In our legal system, a command over written and spoken English is inevitable. English language classes have since been introduced to equip the students with linguistic and expressional skills. The students have been taking a keen interest in the course which the College has offered free of cost.

Certificate Course on IP Laws

A three-month certificate course on the subject of “Intellectual Property Law” is taking place under the umbrella of University of Central Punjab.

“Intellectual Property Law” is a growing field which has evolved and its importance has been recognized by the legal profession. The course contents may be viewed at the short course section of our website.

The course instructor is Mr. Saad Nasrullah who is a practicing lawyer and LL.M scholar having completed different courses on Intellectual Property Laws in Geneva, Switzerland.

Trip to “HARAPPA”

An excursion trip was arranged by Punjab Law College for the students on 9th February 2008 to the ruins of the ancient civilization of “Harappa”. Arrangements were made by Punjab Tourism Development Corporation.

Upon arriving at the site, students first visited the museum which is filled with amazing artifacts. A guide provided by the administration informed students about the history of the ancient civilization including facts about their houses, roads, sanitation and sewerage systems. He also highlighted the contemporary ancient civilizations of Harappa. After that students were given a free hand to enjoy the surroundings in groups. A cricket match was played between faculty and students which ended without any result because the ball was lost. At 2:00 p.m. a lunch arranged by P.T.D.C. was enjoyed by students and faculty. Arriving back at the College at 8 p.m., students were still discussing the exciting day.

Mid Term Examination

According to the college rules students are required to take two in-house examination for each academic year i.e; Mid Term and Send-up Exams. Normally they are held in the months of January and May respectively.

The Mid-term exams consists of regular university paper and one additional paper for Legal English. In all, students are tested  in seven Papers for LLB-I and eight for LLB-II and III.

Report on Debating Competition

Punjab Law College Debating Society organized a great debating competition on 17th January, 2008. This competition was comprised of Urdu “Mubhaisa” English Speech and Punjabi Debates. Three guests were invited on this occasion, M. Muhammad Imran, Mr. M. Aurangzeb Khan Daha and Mr. Zaroon Pirzada. Each speaker spoke with confidence and conviction, holding the complete attention of the audience. The topics of the competition were as under:

English Speech:

  1. What man has made of man?

Speakers were encouraged by the warm response from the audience. At the end of the function names of winners were announced. Rana Ahmed Saeed, Sidra Akram and Faisal Javed got prizes for their remarkable performances.

The team event (opposition) prize was awarded to Akif Tahir, Part I. The fantastic part of that day was Punjabi Debate. Mehwish Fozia Part II brought smiles to faces in the audience with her blend of humour and language. A special prize was awarded to her.

Personality Development through Meditation

Classes on meditation commenced at Punjab Law College on 29.01.2008, when a workshop was conducted at the College. Mr. K.M. Ehtesham, a retired bureaucrat and a practicing lawyer having good command over meditation exercises, informed students about the importance of meditation in everyday life. He highlighted the use of meditation in all walks of life as a mode of relaxation and stress relief. He described different aspects of meditation and the ways in which meditation can be exercised. The basic principle of meditation is to feed the soul and to understand God, he said. He said that all the knowledge is revealed and if one is close to God, one is close to knowledge.

The Meditation classes being conducted at Punjab Law College cover three areas of personality development, which include:-

  • Personality Grooming
  • Anger Management
  • Confidence Building

Students were keen to understand the principles of meditation, and how it could help them in practical life. Engaging in meditation can be especially beneficial to students who are under stress and pressure during their programs of study.

Seminar on “Environmental Law”

At Punjab Law College in Collaboration with the Environment Protection Department

A workshop followed by a seminar was organized by Punjab Law College in collaboration with Punjab Environment Protection Department in which students from Part-II and Part-III actively participated. Applications were invited from volunteers to participate in the workshop and 30 students were selected out of those who applied. On 13th February 2008 the workshop was conducted, which was presided over by Mr. Waqas Dar, Ex-Director, Legal and Head of litigation, S.E.C.P., a seasoned and experienced person who trained the students during the workshop on the subject of environmental law.

On 14th February 2008, a seminar was held in collaboration with the Punjab Environment Protection Department. The programme started with recitation of Holy Quran by a student of Part-I, after which the Welcome note was offered by Mr. Waqas Dar who highlighted the importance of a clean environment. After that two presentations were made by students. The first presentation was made by Hamdia Haq, a student of Part-II on the topic of “Water Pollution” then Ahsan Ullah Manj, a student of Part-II presented the topic of “Air Pollution”. After the presentations Mr. Akhtar Awan, a very well known practicing lawyer of environmental law acquainted the students with the practical problems in the implementation of environmental law. Then the law officer of Environment Department Mr. Nawaz Manik told about the law and its implementation. His address was followed by the Chief Guest, Mr. Kamran Ali Khan, Director General, Environment Protection Agency who enlightened the importance of a clean environment, environmental law and the practical problems in the implementation of environmental law. Before wrapping up the programme a question and answer session was held. In the end, the Principal, Ms. Hadia Awan thanked the guests and participants and presided over distribution of certificates. At the end a lavish lunch was served to the guests and faculty.

Laurals of Success

GLORIOUS TRADITION OF PUNJAB LAW COLLEGE

Keeping up with the old glory of Punjab Law College, Mr. Suleman Hafeez Roll No.1478 secured 1st and Mr. Mohsin Rafi Roll No.1493 secured 2nd position throughout the University of the Punjab in the Annual Examination of LL.B Part – II 2007. The result was declared on 24th of January 2008. Furthermore, Mr. Wajid Ali Roll No.1496, Mr. Muzammil Ghani Roll No.1518 and Suhaib Ahmad Roll No.1489 secured 5th, 6th and 10th position respectively in the University. Previously in LL.B Part – I Annual Examination 2007 the students PLC Mr. Asim Hameed and Miss Rabia Rao captured outstanding positions. The result was announced on 11th of January 2008.

Punjab Group of Colleges is the largest group of colleges in Pakistan and Punjab Law College is the oldest private institution in Lahore. They are striving very hard to impart legal education to the folks with a contemporary professional approach. They have a history of about two decades full of achievements in the field of legal profession to their credit. They have produced number of good lawyers, Judges, bureaucrats, law professional, social workers and their alumni have become part of successful professionals all over the world.

In addition to regular law courses prescribed by the university and approved by the Pakistan Bar Council, they are starting Master degree in Law (LLM) along with short term & professional courses including Mediation, Arbitration, Advocacy Skills etc.

News and Events (2006-07)

A Bar B.Q. Nite 2007

On 18 th December 2007, a Bar B.Q. Nite was arranged by the students of LL.B-III, II, I. The function was formally designed at top roof of college building and all the visiting and permanent faculty members were invited to grace the function. All the students warmly welcomed the faculty members and they all were presented bouquets. The chief guest was the Principal, Punjab Law College, Miss Hadia Awan, the star even shined on P.L.C.

The function started with the name of Almighty Allah and recitation of Holy Na’at. It was followed by funny news, 2 skits, parodies of faculty members, songs, poems, interviews and some other funny presentation. After each parody, the imitated teacher was given a title according to his personality which brought smiles on the faces of the audience.

At the end, some prizes were given to best singer, parodist, drama artist, and best and good looking couple which was given to Prof. Khadim Hussain Malik and this selection was highly applauded by the students.

Lastly, students presented a special token of love to Miss Hadia Awan. In her views, she appreciated the arrangement and hospitality of the students and hoped that the successors will continue this tradition in a more profound manner. She thanked all the faculty members for thier presence. The function ended on a delicious dinner.

CLEAN PAKISTAN CAMPAIGN

Held at U.C.P. on 20 th October 2007

The closing ceremony of “Clean Pakistan” campaign was held on 20th October 2007 at University of Central Punjab.

The Principal of Punjab Law College, Lahore, Miss Hadia Awan, faculty members and many of the students attended the event at UCP.

The program began at 1:30 p.m. with recitation from the Holy Quran. Renowned guests including Mr. Hussain Jahania Gardazi (Minister of food), D.G. N.V.M. Mr. Zia-ul-Haq, Professor Ather Azeem (Dean, faculty of commerce, UCP), Dr. Azhar (Director of ‘Akhowat’) and Mr. Zaheer-ud-Din Butt representative of U.N.D.P. were present.

Prof. Ather Azeem explained the importance of cleanliness which is not just the requirement of our homes but a necessity in public places. He said, “The end of this campaign is the beginning of a new chapter”.

Dr. Izhar threw light on the different aspects and campaigns of “Akhowat”. “Akhowat” started on a small scale but has grown rapidly. He appreciated the volunteer work of 500 students of U.C.P. and looked forward to the continuation of this long-lasting journey.

Students of law, commerce, N.C.A., American School, Steps and different agencies were the largest contributors to this campaign. This campaign known as “Hafta Safai” was done in very organized manner; a data base was developed and ten thousand brochures were printed and distributed among people for developing a sense of cleanliness.

Dr. Kamran Shams, guest speaker praised the sense of this voluntarily driven activity and the way pupils adapted their own household activities to make Pakistan clean.

Mr. Zaheer-ud-Din Butt representative of U.N.D.P highlighted the motivation, and sensitization of participants of “Clean Pakistan” campaign. He placed this campaign as a role model, mobilizing the people for hygiene and cleanliness.

Minister of Food, Mr. Hussain Jahania Gardazi delivered a heartfelt message. He appreciated the hard work done for the ‘Clean Pakistan’ campaign and he gave a spark to the new “Green Pakistan” campaign. Lastly, Miss Hadia Awan remarked upon the importance of this campaign.

The “Clean Pakistan” ceremony wound up with the distribution of prizes and certificates, followed by a reception with refreshments as a way of thanking the valued participants for their time.

Report on Debating Society

The college administration has formed a Debating Society to conduct monthly debates on different topics. A preliminary qualification audition was conducted under the supervision of two faculty members, Mrs. Ammara Rizwan and Rai Yasir Farhad. Response from the students was great and more than thirty students participated.

This process was carried forward and the PLC Debating Society was formally founded under the Presidentship of Mr. Imran Awan from LL.B Part-III; two faculty members took on the responsibility of supervising the activities and programs for the debating society.

The first event in the series of monthly debates was held on 17th of December 2007. Topics for debates in English were:

  1. Unrest of mind is a mark of life
  2. Ignorance of ignorance is the death of knowledge.
  3. Democracy

 

Topics in Urdu were:

The program was held in the college premises and two honourable judges were invited to judge the skills of the participants. Each participant was given 4 to 6 minutes to speak; Urdu and English debators were judged separately.

In the Urdu category, Mr. M. Akif from LL.B Part-I secured the first position and Mr. Faisal Javed from the same part was the runner-up. In the English category, Miss Ume-Aimen from LL.B Part-II secured the first position and Mr. M. Ismail was the runner-up.

A prize distribution ceremony was held at the end of the program.

After the program students and the judges met and shared views on the art of debating.

The whole idea of forming the Debating Society and the events that followed in this regard were met with an overwhelming response from students and the next event on 31st January 2008 is eagerly anticipated.

Report on Law Moot

The Law Moot has long been a glorious tradition at Punjab Law College. In keeping with this convention, a murder trial was conducted in College Hall. This trial was conducted by Mr. Muhammad Aurangzeb Khan Daha, honourable adjunct faculty member, and under the patronage of Miss Hadia Awan, Principal, Punjab Law College Lahore. It was an assignment of LL.B-III students and Khawaja Fahim Ejaz, Advocate Supreme Court, Ex-Judge conducted the mock-murder trial as a judge.

The proceedings were divided into phases. The first phase pertained to an explanation of concepts by the students. FIR, statement of witnesses, challan, procedures of investigation, charge, the examination-in chief, cross-examination, re-examination and oath were explained during this phase.

During the second phase, the trial commenced. The crux of the case was explained by the prosecutor. The accused person and witnesses were summoned. Eight students appeared in the witness box and examination in-chief and cross-examination were conducted by students performing the role of lawyers.

The next phase was closure of evidence and the statement of the accused person. The defence evidence was also produced before the Court in form of witnesses. Final arguments by counsels for both parties were formulated and precedents were presented on the support of the arguments.

The learned Judge analyzed the evidence available on record and pronounced the judgment. The accused persons were acquitted from the charge while giving them benefit of doubt in the evidence.

The proceedings were followed by a prize distribution ceremony and refreshments.

Report on Literary Society

In order to revitalize the co-curricular activities of the college and with the cherished objective of creating a literary atmosphere in the college, on 11th December 2007, a poetry recitation function was held in College Hall. Mr. Muhammad Aurangzeb Khan Daha, honourable faculty member presided over the session. Mr. Muddassar Ch. From LL.B-III hosted the programme. Approximately 25 students from LL.B I, II, III participated. They recited the poems in both Urdu and Punjabi languages. A large number of students attended the programme and appreciated the variety of the poems which were recited by the participants with great enthusiasm.

The program culminated in selecting a winner among the participants based upon confidence, quality of voice and selection of poetry; Faisal Javed from LL.B-I was selected as the winner. Finally, the chief guest, Mr. Daha shared his views with the audience on poetry and praised the quality of poetry recited by the participants. The function ended on this note that this poetry recitation was an excellent step towards the formation of a cultural and literary society in P.L.C.

Seminar on “Road Safety”

Conducted under “Traffic Education Programme” Traffic Police, Lahore

A Seminar on “Road Safety” was arranged at PLC on January 8, 2008 under “Traffic Education Programme” of Traffic Police, Punjab. The speakers included Mr. Shehzad Humayun, Warden, Traffic Police, Mr. Sibghat Ullah, Senior Warden, Miss Nazia Baqir and Miss Nabila, Wardens and Mr. Tasleem Shuja, Manager Safety and Customer Care, Atlas Honda Limited.

Mr. Shehzad Humayun introduced the team and highlighted the necessity of traffic rules and the contributions Traffic Wardens have made, and he thanked the Principal, Punjab Law College Lahore, Miss Hadia Awan for providing them an opportunity to spread the education programme in Punjab Law College.

After the introduction, Miss Nazia Baqir highlighted the steps taken by the Provincial Government in order to improve traffic conditions and avoid road accidents. She pinpointed the various causes of road accidents and the ways to avoid them. Accidents cause a deep impact on our lives and daily 30 to 35 people die due to this curse, she said. She concluded her talk by describing different measures which are very helpful in controlling the increasing number of accidents.

Inspector Sibghat Ullah, Senior Warden, focused mainly on traffic signals and the importance of properly observing them. He said that a reduction in number of accidents is quite possible by correcting the flow of traffic. He emphasized that care must be taken especially regarding women and disabled persons as pedestrians. He also mentioned the lesson of Islam is to respect humanity and it is the citizen’s duty to realize this obligation. He described various kinds of traffic signals and signs and highlighted the consequences of disobeying those signals and signs. At the end he showed different clips in which dangerous accidents occurred due to violation of signals.

Finally, Mr. Tasleem Shuja shared his experiences about road accidents and delivered a lecture on vehicle fitness. He highlighted different reasons why accident occurs as far as fitness of vehicle is concerned. He pinpointed various measures that should be taken for fitness of the vehicle and to avoid accidents. He concluded his lecture by enumerating different tips for safe driving.

The seminar was followed by refreshments and appreciation for all the participants was evident from the ensuing discussions.

Report on Seminar on Human Rights Day

A Seminar was conducted by White Ribbon Campaign Pakistan in collaboration with Punjab Law College Lahore on 11 th of December 2007. This seminar was generally about human rights and especially about women rights.

The Program started at 12:00 noon and Mr. Umer Aftab, the Country Director (WRCP) spoke about the NGO and its role in creating awareness about women violence among masses. He emphasized that his organization was especially targeting the male population of the country as it is they who commit most of the violence. He also spoke about different tools and methods applied by the NGO to spread the message.

After he finished one of the students of LL.B Part-II namely Mr. Ihsan Ullah Manj read a research paper prepared by students of Part-II about “Sexual Harassment of Women”. He highlighted the issue under the heads of harassment is general and workplace sexual harassment.

After that two of the faculty members, Mr. Nasir Majeed and Mr. Muhammad Azeem Farooqi, read their research papers. Mr. Nasir spoke about how Hudood Laws have been used to the detriment of the women and how this problem can be tackled. Mr. Farooqi brought out the different aspects of Women Protection Bill and threw light upon the subject that to what extent this law can help the women.

After him the Honourable guest speaker Dr. Zahid Mehmood, Director Clinical Psychology Department, Government College University Lahore, came on stage and enlightened the audience with his views. He compared local situation regarding this aspect with that of developed countries like U.K. and other European countries. He further stated that in Pakistan women violence is considered a social issue and law enforcing authorities do not entrust themselves with this rather they discourage the victim. Whereas in developed countries it is not so and violence against women is a legal issue and authorities do take action if atrocity is committed.

He also threw light on means to eradicate this problem. He suggested an institutionalized effort to create awareness as well as suggesting punitive action against violation of women rights.

At end of the program, a question answer session was held and to mark the end of it honourable Miss Hadia Awan, Principal, Punjab Law College, Lahore, came on stage to say a word of thanks. She also applauded the efforts of (WRCP) for the cause of ending violence against women.

After the program souvenirs were given by the college to Dr. Zahid Mehmood and Mr. Umer Aftab, Country Director (WRCP).

After that all the audience were served with refreshments.

The whole program was a success, since the students took keen interest in it and asked intriguing questions.

News and Events (2006-07)

Recreational Tour to Kheora Mines

In the last week of December, a one-day recreational tour to Kheora Salt Mines, comprising forty-five students, was arranged for LL.B-II. Not only that the students enjoyed the picturesque scenery, they also had useful information about various geographical aspects of the region and the mechanics of the mines. Ms Shabnum Najeeb (Administrative Officer, PLC) and Mr Ayaz Qaiser (Adjunct Faculty Member, PLC) accompanied the students.

 

Variety Show

On January 29, 2005, the Dramatic Club organised and performed a wonderful variety show. The magnificent event comprised comic skits, news, parodies, and songs. Both the faculty and students enjoyed the show, which was a part of the numerous co-curricular activities being conducted for the moral, academic, and professional grooming of the pupils. In his concluding speech, Dr Syed Abul Hassan Najmee, Dean, PLC, who was also the chief guest, appreciated the effort and assured the students that the administration will generously support and facilitate such activities in the future also. The programme was supervised by Mirza Mohammad Saleem (Administrative Officer), Ms Shabnum Najeeb (Administrative Officer), and Mr Ayaz Qaiser (Adjunct Faculty).

On the eve of Iqbal Day on 9 th November, 2006, a program was conducted under the Debating Society of the college at which students of the college spoke on different aspects of Allama Iqbal’s Life.

Workshop on Guardian and Wards Act. (Mrs. Noreen Jaffery) on 3 rd February, 2007 participated by the students of LLB part II. On this Seminar, Mrs. Noreen Jaffery highlighted various aspects of the said Act in a manner easily understandable by the students.

Lecture on Domestic violence by Marylin Mornington on 17 th March, 2007.

Marylin is a District Judge in Yorkshire Court in United Kingdom. In her lecture, she pinpointed the basic reasons for “violence against women”. She informed the students about the research on this subject which she had conducted and told the students the statistics of the cases of violence against women.

Law Moot; criminal law on Murder Trial performed by the students of final year, judged by a renowned criminal lawyer Mr. Afzal Siddiqui on 24 th March, 2007, organized by Mr. Aurangzaib Daha, Advocate High Court and adjunct faculty member.

The students of LLB part III performed at the Law Moot, in which a murder trial was conducted. The students were wearing the uniforms and they were representing both sides namely, prosecution and the defense. A proper atmosphere of court room was created in a way that there were witnesses on both sides, of prosecution and of defense and an ahlmad was also there to call upon the people in the court room. The purpose of all this is to make the students acquainted with the court procedures and rules.

Seminar on the Role of Lawyer

The college conducted a seminar on the Role of Lawyer in the present scenario of “Reference against Chief Justice of Pakistan by the President” at Pearl Continental in collaboration with Jang Group of newspaper on 1st April, 2007. The report of this seminar has been published in the newspaper daily “Jang”.

 

A lecture on career counseling by Dr. Ijaz on 2 nd April, 2007.

Dr. Ijaz is Director Operations, Consortium of British Universities, Pakistan. His lecture was on the scope of higher education in the field of Law from United Kingdom. He emphasized various aspects of Masters in Law from British Universities.

 

Visit of Sessions court conducted by college for the students of final year accompanied by the faculty on 7 th April, 2007.

Workshop on IP law at LCCI attended by students and the faculty on 4 th and 5 th May, 2007.

Workshop on IP laws conducted by Research Society of International Law at a Corporate Law Firm ABS & Co. attended by the faculty. In this workshop Intellectual Property Laws were discussed by highlighting their significance and use in Pakistan.

A series of seminars on “Women Protection Laws” in the college of which one was presided over by Justice (R) Nasira Javed and another was presided over by Principal, Miss Hadia Awan and Dean, Mr. Zill-e-Atif.

 

Final Term Exams (16th June-30th June)

The college conducted final term exams for the students of both morning and evening session. The purpose of these exams is to provide the students an exam practice before going for university annual exams.
